SchengenTrack's algorithm strictly follows the official 180-Day Rolling Window rule used by European border control. Instead of looking forward, the system always looks backward 180 days from today (or your planned travel date). It checks if the total number of days spent inside the Schengen Area exceeds 90 within this moving timeframe. As time moves forward, the 180-day window moves with it. Older trips eventually fall outside this window, freeing up "new" allowed days for you.

What is the Schengen 90/180-day rule?

The 90/180-day rule limits short-stay travelers — visa-free or on a C-type visa — to 90 days inside the Schengen Area in any 180-day period. The window rolls: on each day of a stay you look back over the previous 180 days and add up the days already spent inside the Area.

How does the "Rolling Window" calculation work?

The "rolling window" means that the 180-day period is not fixed to a calendar year or a visa start date. Instead, it is calculated backwards from each day of your stay. Our calculator automates this complex math by scanning your entry and exit dates to ensure that at no point during your travels you exceed the allowed quota.

Which countries are included in this calculation?

The rule applies to all countries in the Schengen Area. This includes most EU countries (like France, Germany, Italy, and Spain) plus non-EU countries like Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.

Note: As of 2024/2025, Bulgaria and Romania have joined the Schengen Area. Countries like Turkey, Serbia, and the UK are not part of Schengen, so stays there do not count towards your 90-day limit.

Does a stay in a non-Schengen country pause my limit?

No — and the difference matters. Days spent in Serbia, Turkey, the United Kingdom or any other non-Schengen country simply do not count toward your 90. The 180-day window itself never pauses: it keeps rolling forward the whole time you are away. That is still why leaving helps — while you are outside, your older Schengen stays gradually drop off the back of the window and free up days again.

What are the consequences of overstaying?

Overstaying is taken very seriously by border authorities. Consequences can include:

•Heavy Fines: Often ranging from hundreds to thousands of Euros.
•Deportation: Immediate removal from the Schengen Area.
•Entry Bans: You may be banned from re-entering any Schengen country for 3 to 10 years.
•Future Visa Denials: An overstay makes it much harder to get any visa in the future.

When does my 90-day limit fully reset?

Your history fully clears 180 days after the last day of your most recent Schengen stay — the first day on which the 180-day look-back window no longer contains any of your trips. Our calculator provides a "Full Reset Date" which tells you exactly when your 90-day allowance will be completely empty and ready to use again in full.
