Instead of looking forward, the system always looks backward 180 days from today (or your planned travel date). It checks if the total number of days spent inside the Schengen Area exceeds 90 within this moving timeframe. As time moves forward, the 180-day window moves with it. Older trips eventually fall outside this window, freeing up "new" allowed days for you.

What exactly is the Schengen 90/180-day rule?

The 90/180-day rule is the limit for short-stay travelers (visa-free or on a C-type visa) in the Schengen Area. You are allowed to stay for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. The most important thing to remember is that this is a "rolling window"—every day you are in the Schengen Area, you must look back at the previous 180 days to ensure you haven't exceeded the 90-day limit.

How does the "Rolling Window" calculation work?

The "rolling window" means that the 180-day period is not fixed to a calendar year or a visa start date. Instead, it is calculated backwards from each day of your stay. Our calculator automates this complex math by scanning your entry and exit dates to ensure that at no point during your travels you exceed the allowed quota.

Which countries are included in this calculation?

The rule applies to all countries in the Schengen Area. This includes most EU countries (like France, Germany, Italy, and Spain) plus non-EU countries like Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.

Note: As of 2024/2025, Bulgaria and Romania have joined the Schengen Area. Countries like Turkey, Serbia, and the UK are not part of Schengen, so stays there do not count towards your 90-day limit.

Does a stay in a non-Schengen country pause my limit?

Yes. If you leave the Schengen Area to visit a country like Serbia, Turkey, or the United Kingdom, your 90-day "clock" pauses. You can use these non-Schengen stays strategically to "reset" your days or wait for older stays to drop out of your 180-day rolling window.

What are the consequences of overstaying?

Overstaying is taken very seriously by border authorities. Consequences can include:

• Heavy Fines: Often ranging from hundreds to thousands of Euros.
• Deportation: Immediate removal from the Schengen Area.
• Entry Bans: You may be banned from re-entering any Schengen country for 3 to 10 years.
• Future Visa Denials: An overstay makes it much harder to get any visa in the future.

When does my 90-day limit fully reset?

Your limit "resets" once 180 days have passed since the first day of your last Schengen stay. Our calculator provides a "Full Reset Date" which tells you exactly when your 90-day allowance will be completely empty and ready to use again in full.
