Bulgaria and Romania: Navigating the New Schengen Borders

Politics & Travel

The 2026 Landscape

For years, Bulgaria and Romania were the "safe havens" where you could stay without affecting your Schengen days. As of 2024 and 2025, that has changed. Both countries are now full members of the Schengen Area, meaning the time you spend in Bucharest or Sofia now directly consumes your 90-day allowance.

What Travelers Need to Know

  • ! Air and Sea vs. Land: While air and sea borders were the first to be integrated, land border checks are becoming increasingly rare as integration completes.
  • ! Integrated Databases: Your entry into Romania is now instantly visible to a border guard in Portugal. The days are synchronized across the entire 29-country zone.

Strategic Planning

If you were planning to use Eastern Europe to "wait out" your days, you now need to look further East or South, to countries like Georgia, Armenia, or Cyprus (which remains outside the 90/180-day zone for now).

Note: Countries like Cyprus still offer a separate 90-day allowance, making them excellent choices for long-term travelers in Europe.
